Hope and Survival in Niger

Maria’s story is a powerful reminder of the harsh realities faced by families in Niger. Despite working tirelessly, Maria and her husband struggled to provide food and clean water for their daughter, Fatchima. In a heart-wrenching moment, Maria confided,

" I want other mothers in America to know that I am doing the best I can for my Fatchima. I love her very much. "

When Fatchima's health began to deteriorate, Maria made the brave choice to spend a day’s earnings on transport to a Save the Children malnutrition unit, ultimately saving her daughter’s life.

Fatchima’s condition highlighted the urgent need for proper nutrition and clean water for children’s survival. Save the Children’s efforts in Niger, from emergency malnutrition units to local health programs, have proven that with support and resources, lives can be saved, and families can find hope.

This story serves as both a call for compassion and action. With continued support, we can ensure that no mother has to watch her child suffer from hunger. Maria’s courage shows that even in the most challenging times, hope and change are possible.
